Improving Performance through Gap Assessments & Active Planning

This course is designed for those who have completed the Essential Strategy Foundations course and want to gain a deeper understanding of gap assessment and performance improvement techniques. This course is applicable to all types and sizes of organizations with established risk/strategy programs in place and/or those who are looking to mature/expand their existing programs.  All of our training sessions may be attended in-person or via live stream.


In this course, we provide methodology and guidelines for reviewing an existing strategic plans and processes to identify potential gaps, weaknesses, or areas of untapped strength.  You will learn how to gap assess existing strategy as well as the programs that support its implementation, and we will cover best practices for organizations of various types, sizes, and industries. 


We will explain how to design and apply risk appetite and tolerance statements and you will learn how to develop meaningful statements and define risk capacity, triggers, and thresholds that can be cascaded and reported. You will also learn how to define KPIs and KRIs to support risk appetite/tolerance controls, and inversely how to use already-defined performance metrics to build risk appetite statements.


This course includes a survey of key tools, how they should be properly used, and how to modify them to better identify key opportunities based on internal proficiencies. We will show you how to re-engineer SWOT, Balanced Score Card and others to provide greater value to your assessment process, feeding critical information into goal prioritization efforts.


We also build on the Foundations course by taking a deeper dive into key elements of resilience planning, including business continuity, succession planning, digital transformation, and more. You will learn how the continuity and resilience thought process should be applied across different types of entities and how industries and sectors factor into the equation. 


Throughout this course, you will apply foundational principles to case studies and/or your own relevant scenarios by participating in a series of exercises designed to reveal common issues with strategy execution and how to correct those issues.  You will learn to risk-assess strategic objectives to identify obstacles to success in their functional area, division, or organization.


The key output of this class is the completion of a self-assessment in at least one area of difficulty with recommendations on how to remedy to improve performance.
